Carriers of hope..

When I made this porcelain diorama featuring Cow, Frog and Fish 2 years ago now I didn’t really feel like I had made it – if that makes any sense at all… Let me explain..

I felt like the image of what I was to make was planted into my mind and that my hands were simply the tools equipped to give it physical life. Once it was finished I distinctly remember sitting back and feeling like it had been made through me but not by me. That I couldn’t take all the credit for it, that the idea had been whispered to me somehow. Perhaps you can relate to hearing those whispers that seep into this world from another?

When I exhibited at the fairs last year – Saltaire Makers Fair and The Hepworth Ceramics Fair, it was always the piece that received the most attention. It seemed to give off an energy all of it’s own and received alot of love – especially from children. I think the energy it carried was similar to that feeling you get when you listen to a piece of music you love, when you get lost in a golden sunset or spend an hour with a good friend.

Art has the power to change how people feel, it can make them question things, or make them joyful, make them feel somber or inspired. It can create change in the world and be a carrier of hope.

These scenes are often about creating idyllic enchanted versions of our world and letting people get lost in them. But I hope the underlying message is received too. That while your heart is open to a little enchantment, so too may it be open to the wellbeing of farmed animals. That these scenes may become something closer to reality for all animals rather than just a vision in my mind and something I take out of the kiln.

This piece has been the most special thing I’ve ever made and I’m so pleased that it now has now been sold via the wonderful people at Byard Art Gallery in Cambridge. I know it will share its energy of hope and compassion with its new owner, spreading it’s joy in a weird and wonderful way.
